NFL Ratings Decline a Result of Change in Viewing Habits

In 2014, the National Football League (NFL) was ranked as the most popular American professional sports league for the 30th consecutive year. However, according to Forbes, the following year, the league's viewership numbers plateaued and eventually began a decline that has continued to this day. Overall viewership in 2016, for instance, fell a remarkable 9 percent, though it was an improvement from the 14 percent decline through the first nine weeks of the season. Additionally, Fox and ESPN had their worst viewership since 2008 and 2005, respectively.

Similarly, ratings for NASCAR and the National Basketball Association, among other sports organizations, were down in recent years, as fans have changed their viewing habits. For the NFL, fans watched 5 percent more games in 2016 than the year prior, but watched less of each game, and did so increasingly through streaming services as opposed to cable TV networks.
